Jamaican banana oatmeal fritters (low carb)

Banana oatmeal fritters

For the last few weeks I’ve been craving for fritters. But not just any fritters, delicious banana fritters that’s a staple here in Jamaica. In our home, we would make banana fritters particularly on Saturday mornings. I love how the sweet aroma flows throughout the house as it’s frying. It’s been one of those things I’ve missed since going low carb. Now thanks to these banana oatmeal fritters, I don’t have to.

I’ve tried other low carb fritters that I’ve enjoyed like my  curry sardine fritters. The problem is whether you’re using coconut or almond flour, you have to use eggs so that it holds together. Then I remembered when I used oatmeal to make pancakes a few years ago. I simply put some oats into the blender and blend until it resembles flour.

For those who are eating really low carb such as keto, I don’t recommend this. You would be better off using almond or coconut flour. I personally just don’t enjoy those flour as much as other might. But if you do, then by all means go ahead.

I have seen other using just the banana. Whenever I try to use a banana baked food recipe, I can’t seem to get it right. And for someone who enjoys baking, it’s a bit discouraging. I continue to learn new ways how to make baking and this new way of life work together.

The results were both amazing and delicious. It not only satisfied my craving for banana fritters but it was less carbs than the traditional recipe. I’m so glad that I found a new way to make one of my favourite breakfasts. This recipe is not keto friendly so if you’re not eating 20 carbs or less then you can add this recipe to your breakfast/ brunch list. Enjoy this Banana oatmeal fritters at anytime.

Jamaican banana oatmeal fritters (low carb)

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Servings 4 -5 fritters

  • 1 large banana
  • ¼ cup oatmeal/oat flour
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp of vanilla/ rose and almond water
  • 1 cup of water warm water preferably
  • 1 tbsp of sweetener optional, I didn't use any
  • oil for frying I used coconut oil

  1. Using a blender or food processor, blend the oats until it's resembles flour. You may need to use a fork to stir the oats to make sure that it's all blended
  2. In a mixing bowl, mash the banana until it's smooth with no lumps. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla/ rose and almond water. Stir until everything is combined
  3. Add the oat flour and stir. While stirring the batter, carefully add the water in small portions. It should resemble pancake batter. Warms water works best as it activate the oats which holds the batter together well
  4. Place a non-stick pan over medium high heat and add the oil. If the batter becomes a little thick, just add more water. Please remember to do so in small portions so that it doesn't become watery.
  5. Spoon the batter into the oil, a tablespoon each is enough to make the fritters. However, you can make it as small or large as you want. Cook on each side until its golden brown.
  6. Remove the fritters from oil and drain on paper towel. This should make about 5 or 6 fritters if you use a tablespoon each. Serve with a nice cup of coffee or tea and enjoy!
