Why do I blog? The highs and lows

I’ve been on this journey a while now. Almost a year to be exact. Sometimes I feel like it’s one great moment of success and another…. failure. Don’t get me wrong, I love to write. Once upon a time, it used to be my favourite hobby and escape. But lately I’ve been wondering why I decided to blog in the first place. More important, is it something I’m happy about?

I decided to begin blogging because I enjoyed writing and sharing with others. I wanted a chance to interact with others in a way that made me happy. While I still love writing and sharing, I’ve come to understand that blogging is very different than what I imagined.

The highs of blogging

The number one thing I love about blogging is that you can reach a wider audience. I’ve always wanted to speak with and interact with people from around the world and discuss different topics about our lives. That became a very important part of the ten foot journey. So much so that I started an online community to connect with readers from worldwide.

Another great thing about blogging is that it’s like writing pages of a book anytime you want. I think I enjoy the blogging process more than I would writing a book. Which is why I’ve never been interested in writing one. Blogging also allows me to share my passions in a way only I can/ want to. It’s not what you say but how you say it that truly matters.

The lows of blogging

Yes. There are pluses and minuses to everything in life and blogging is no exemption. If it wasn’t for the fact that I get to divulge in my passions, I’d probably abandon the whole thing a month ago.

The first thing that bothers me about blogging is about social media. You can have a ton of people come to your post and like it but very few will actually read it. That can be very discouraging. I’m not sure if those who video blog (i.e vlog) face the same problem. It can make you feel like your work is a bit under appreciated or mediocre.

Another social media issue that bothers me are the bloggers groups that are out there. Trust me, there are some good ones and I love the idea that we support each other’s work. But to be honest, many bloggers aren’t really interested in the “community” aspect of the groups. Mostly just to promote their post, fulfill the instructions and move on. It can feel kind of empty, like we’re mindlessly doing it instead actually being interested in each other’s posts. Trust me, I’ve been in that boat before. But now, I only practice reading post that I find incredibly fascinating or interesting. Like pages of “a book of life” that I read that constantly adds new chapters each and every time.

The last thing that is daunting about blogging is that at the beginning, the amount of responses can be slow. sometimes I wish to spark conversations over a post or topic. With fewer people, it’s almost impossible. Many people just read, maybe comment and move along. I don’t want that. I want to talk to all my readers. I know that it’ll be harder as the number grows but completely worth it in my opinion.

Final word?

I think that as time goes by these lows will become a non-factor. I’m hopeful, as I always am and ambitious. I set out to overcome a mountain and even if I have to change course, I will. I will continue to blog because I do love it. I love to share, interact, connect and learn. I do believe that this is the way to do it.

To quote Frances Mayes from the movie Under the Tuscan sun (my all time favourite movie!) “They say they built the train tracks over the Alps before there was a train that could make the trip. They built it anyway. They knew one day the train would come. Any arbitrary turning along the way,and I would be elsewhere. I would be different. ”

Here’s my bit: In hindsight, no one said that anything in life would be easy. It’s our willingness to bare the hard times and overcome difficulties, that will determine the outcome of our lives. To expect anything else, would only divulge us from our paths.
