It’s been about 6-7 months since I made a promise to myself to change. Change my perspective, anxiety, habits and way I lived life. It’s been a hard journey filled with uncertainty and a lot of anxiety. But I’m proud to say I am happy I did it. It can be a scary thing to change from one way of living or doing things to another. But the rewards were too great for me to ever give up.
A dream of adventure
The first decision I made was to change the way I lived life. What do I mean by this? I used to think that until my current situation changed, I couldn’t begin living the life that I wanted. That wasn’t necessarily true. There were small steps that could take to help me live the life that I dreamed of but I just couldn’t see it. It was up to me to change my perspective of what I could and could not do. This is how I realized my dream of travel and adventure.
I’ve loved travelling since I was a little girl. I always went on school trips because I wanted to be somewhere new. It opened my eyes to parts of the country and world that I didn’t know existed or only ever saw in a picture. The difference with school trips and travelling now is I would be travelling alone.
I won’t lie to you, I’ve tried persuading my friends to come with me on trips out of fear. One day, I just decided to go on my own. And you know what? I had a great time. Sometimes we pay so much attention to all the things that could go wrong, that we forget all that could go right.
Living well: Simple lifestyle
Another thing that made the biggest impact on my life was how I lived. I grew up in a working class family. We led very simple lives, living the best we can within our means. I can happily tell you that our upbringing was the best thing to happen to me. It gave me the foundation for how I live life now. We valued every single thing we had and every dime we spent. We knew it was our parents hard work and sacrifice that allowed us to be where we are now. My brothers and I felt rich despite being poor. This was all because our parents met our basic needs well. We never felt deprived and we weren’t high maintenance children.
I decided that I wanted to live a simple life. I starting to re-evaluate what I wanted in my life. I realized I didn’t need much to make my life comfortable. This was one of the easiest steps I could take. I knew I didn’t need the latest gadgets, fanciest clothes, highest paying job, riches or an army of friend to make my life special. I had what I needed. Now I spend my time with the people who love me most, doing the things that actually make me happy rather than what’s cool or expected of me. I work hard, save as much but still enjoy myself.
My life is at a nice balanced. While I’m not quite where I want to be, it’s the journey that’s important. Not the destination.
Eating right… discovering whole foods and weight loss
I have always been a chubby person since I was a baby. But the good news is I’ve always loved myself. However, there was a point in my life where being overweight was getting too much for me. I also started experiencing digestion troubles which made me reluctant to eat. So I decided it was time to make to better choices. I starting a low fat diet which was fine at first. I found that I was hungry all the time, unsatisfied with food and had digestion issues still. I couldn’t figure out what was causing me to feel this way. It wasn’t until I discovered the low carb diet that I knew what was wrong.
In January 2017, I discovered the low carb diet. I started on a ketogenic diet for 2-3 months before raising my carb level. Between that time I had no digestion issue or even stomach aches. I realized that processed refined food such as rice, flour (both white & wheat) as well as sugar and all their by products were causing me digestion troubles. Once I took them out of my diet for a healthier choice made from real foods and natural sweeteners, it was a relief. And I don’t regret the decision. I have so much energy, comfort and learnt what it felt like to truly feel full.
The thing about the low carb diet is that it limits or takes grains out your diet completely. I love oats and I use it to make flour for make pancakes, fritter and fried chicken. I slowly added it back into my diet. The biggest result was I lost about 30 pounds, working out 2-3 times a week in 6 months. I’ve since added bulgur wheat into my diet as a rice substitute and I love it.
I still have a little ways to go to get to my goal but I’m taking my time and enjoying the process. I eat all my food groups, have no digestion issues and I’m way healthier physically and emotionally than I once was. I don’t classify any food as good or bad or fear eating anything either. If I feel like having something like ice cream (which I love) I don’t worry at all about it. I don’t overeat or stress, I simply enjoy and be thankful for it. I eat real foods 95% of the time and enjoy other foods ONLY when I feel like I want to. It’s important to find your balance for better eating habits.
I know change can be a scary thing but it doesn’t have to be. Change can lead to a lot of wonderful things. It can transform our lives in ways we couldn’t possibly imagine. Change is the journey to transformation, our fear becomes a road block. Once we find a way around whatever is holding us back, can we truly begin to live.
